Star wrote this for a contest at school. Wow. Just wow.
In December of 2010, I lived in Odessa, Ukraine. When I was in Ukraine, I did not have any parents, and I lived in an orphanage. I lived in the orphanage for 10 years and I always dreamed of having a family in America. Some of my friends were chosen to spend Christmas in America with host families. The orphanage director said I was not allowed to go. That made me sad because I wanted to go too, because I wanted to have a happy time in America and maybe find a family to adopt me.
An American family came to my orphanage to adopt my friend, Ali. They visited every day. One day they brought Christmas presents for all of the children. I got to spend time with Ali's new family. They spent a couple of weeks at the orphanage, and then they all left to go home to America.
Six months later, the same family came back to Ukraine. I did not know why they were there. I asked them if they had brought a present for me from Ali. They laughed and said no. They were there to ask me if I wanted to be adopted and to be part of their family in America.
My new parents named me Natalya, which means, “born at Christmas”- because I was born into their hearts the day they gave me that Christmas present in the orphanage. Christmas of 2010 brought me the best present ever- a family. I waited a very long time for this gift, 10 years, but this is a present that will last for the rest of my life. I know my friends in Ukraine are still waiting for this gift. I pray that they will have a family someday too because having a family will help them have a great future filled with love! To me, Christmas is not about having a lot of presents to open, it’s to have a family that loves you.
