Well, the school said they couldn't help Star with her speech because she's too old for speech to qualify as a stand alone service. They sent us to the local rehab./therapy center. THEY couldn't help us because there is no medical reason for this "very obvious speech issue" and said we should try to get it covered through the school. I told her they sent us to them, and then I got a card for an IEP advocate center because other than paying for private "lessons", they couldn't get it covered because her mouth is not disfigured, her teeth are fine, her ears proved to be fine, etc.
Everyone agrees there is a speech issue, but no one will provide services for her. We have been sent in a circle, and this circle has gone on for months now.
The ONLY way she could POSSIBLY ("Maybe, but highly doubtful") qualify for another IEP to tag onto speech is if we tried the fact that she doesn't read at grade level. But "chances are they would say it's because she is ESL" (which is true). BUT to get her services for reading, she would have to be in the lowest section (where she was last year), with the students who are not at grade level (most by choice rather than a foreign language issue, or real learning need) even though she is a straight A student, and we would be throwing away her academics to save her speech. So, it's a catch 22.
I just want to climb into bed and rest for awhile because I really feel defeated. Except I'm at work and that might be frowned upon.
